Jeff Shuman Jeff Shuman, PhD, CSAP, Principal, The Rhythm of Business, Inc. and Professor of Management, Bentley University

Jan Twombly

Too many committee meetings that don’t seem to accomplish anything? Budgets that can’t get spent because no one can come to agreement on what to do? Frustrated team members? Increasingly, alliance professionals report governance in their alliances is no longer working and, in fact, is jeopardizing the future of these alliances. Most simply governance is how collaborating organizations manage their joint work. The problem may lie in the structure of the governance itself: grounded in traditional, hierarchal models. To make alliances and their governance more effective, an entrepreneurial approach that evolves with the purpose and strategic intent of the alliance is essential. This presentation will present a blueprint for analyzing the effectiveness of alliance governance and charting a course to a flexible and fit for purpose model. By thinking entrepreneurially, alliance professionals can make effective governance one of the pillars of alliance success.

9:10 Keynote Presentation: Cooperative Competition and Strategic Alliances

RanganSrinivasa Rangan, Professor of Strategy and International Business, Babson College

With economic conditions shifting rapidly, organizations are finding new ways to compete in today’s global economy. One approach is to work more closely with external partners.  Still, even as alliances proliferate, organizations want to remain independent and manage their own growth by exercising control, allocating resources, and managing risks. This talk will explore the managerial issues raised by the need to balance cooperation in alliances against the need to maintain organizational independence to pursue strategic goals of the partner firms.

Establishing Measurable Objectives and Performance Metrics

2:35 Plenary session - Creating an Alliance Metrics Regime: A Case Study from Outside the Life Sciences Industry

Stuart Kliman, J.D., Head, Pharmaceuticals Practice Area, Vantage Partners

In an age of accountability, quantifying the value of alliances is important on two levels. First, senior executives need to assess business activities and measure performance. Second, alliance managers can use metrics to identify areas for improvement and work to refine processes and optimize performance. In this session, we will share an example from outside the Life Sciences industry of an organization that has built and implemented an alliance metrics regime that has consistent metrics to measure and monitor alliances across its alliance portfolio.

3:05 Integrating Personalities and Metrics Towards a Shared Goal

Tom Dyer, Principal, Executives Outcomes Consulting

As alliance teams work together in establishing metrics, a component most overlooked is how personalities play into these metrics.  Most often, information is used to drive metrics. Personalities of individuals can actual influence how and what metrics are created and which are used.  This talk will explore how both personalities and metrics relate and how both can be used in establishing meaningful metrics.
