Portfolio management has a long history and good track record in functional applications such as R&D, new product development and IT. The methodologies for project & program evaluation, decision & risk analysis and portfolio optimization are by now well established in these functional portfolios. Top management however has a higher challenge: to ensure the best use of scarce resources in terms of return on investment and shareholder value creation at all levels of their organization, starting with their business groups and strategic business units.

This presentation shows how to design and implement a business portfolio management and optimization process at the highest level of an enterprise and to link it consistently with established portfolio management processes at lower levels in the organization.

Industry is in the early stages of implementing enterprise-wide portfolio management (EPM). The short course will conclude with a discussion of why you should and how you can get started with EPM, with participants sharing insights from their own portfolio management journeys.

Based on over a decade of experience in building and managing Portfolio Management departments within the Pharma & Biotech industry, your short course leaders provide a structured roadmap to achieve sustained success in managing a portfolio of projects from discovery to commercialization through the use of the following sub-disciplines.

Not surprisingly, decision-making at the fuzzy front end of the stage gate process remains a contentious challenge and your short course leaders provide sound guidance on how good decisions can be made to minimize both type I and II errors.

Pipeline Management Simulation Exercise: Participants will manage a simulated Pharma pipeline, managing multiple therapeutic areas (strategic buckets) from discovery through clinical trials. The dynamics of project selection and how to exploit these dynamics to create a successful.
