Kevin Townsend PhotoKevin Townsend is a Partner based in the Lovells New York office.  Kevin's expertise lies in intellectual property, transactional and regulatory counseling, acquisition, licensing, due diligence, dispute resolution, opinions, and appeals for the development and commercialization of biotechnology products and technologies.  With 20 years of in house and law firm experience, Kevin has supported the intellectual property, transactional, regulatory, and related legal business needs of small, medium and global life sciences companies in the United States, Europe and Asia.  In addition to managing more than 20 patent and regulatory product portfolios, he has drafted more than 500 patent applications, prosecuted more than 1000 US patent applications and managed worldwide patent prosecution for more than 500 patent families.  Kevin has conducted more than 100 product and company transactional and IP due diligences, negotiations and agreements, as well as more than 1000 agreement negotiations and drafting, including feasibility, research, service, investigator initiated clinical studies, clinical studies and master agreements, manufacturing, product and technology licensing, know how and patent licenses, acquisitions, and product and technology out-licensing.  Kevin worked as in house patent and business development counsel at Johnson & Johnson supporting its largest product, Remicade™ and also at Eli Lilly.  Kevin began his legal career with several large law firms representing various pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, plant and other life sciences companies. Before attending law school, he worked as a molecular biologist at the NIH studying DNA repair and cytochrome p450 expression, characterization, enzymology and monoclonal antibody inhibition in recombinant vaccinia, retrovirus and baculovirus expression systems.
