He is currently Associate Professor of Genetics, Genomics, and Gene Therapy and Director of the Biotechnology Program at the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.

Biography: Stuart Lindsay is Director of the Center for Single Molecule Biophysics in the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, a Regent’s Professor and Nadine and Edward Carson professor of physics and chemistry. He received his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Manchester, UK. His research focuses on nano-scale biophysics ( He has pioneered aspects of atomic force microscopy, particularly those related to imaging and chemical analysis in water. He holds 30 US patents and was co-founder of Molecular Imaging (now part of Agilent Technologies). He has published over 200 research papers. His textbook, Introduction to Nanoscience, has just been published by OUP. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His expertise is in bio-nanoscience, nanomeasurement and nanofabrication. Current research interests include nanoscale chemical mapping, applications of nanoscience for sustainable energy, new techniques for DNA sequencing based on electron tunneling, and nanoscale probes of epigenetic markings and cell biochemistry.

Biography: Patrizia Paterlini-Brechot, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Cell Biology and Oncology, and Director of Inserm U.807 Laboratory. In addition to fundamental research studies in her career on HBV- and HCV-related liver carcinogenesis and calcium signalling, she focused on applied research, targeting the domains of predictive oncology and prenatal diagnosis. In 2000, her research activity led to the discovery and development of the now patented ISET (Isolation by Size of Epithelial Tumor/Trophoblastic Cells) technique for isolation and characterization of circulating rare cells, including circulating tumor and fetal cells permitting non invasive cancer diagnostics and follow up and non invasive prenatal diagnosis of genetic diseases. Pr Paterlini-Brechot oversees the continuing development of the ISET techniques as well as its applications. Her work has earned her numerous awards and led to high level publications. Patrizia Paterlini-Brechot is the founder of Rarecells SAS and Rarecells Holdings, Inc.

Biography: Dr. Patrick Morris is an associate in the firm's Intellectual Property practice, with a primary focus on biotechnology. He provides clients with a range of intellectual property services, including patent procurement, patent strategy counseling, due diligence, and patentability and freedom to operate opinions. Patrick has experience in managing all aspects of complex patent portfolios, including due diligence relating to licensing, funding, and partnership negotiations.

Patrick has extensive experience in appeals and interferences before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, having participated in numerous appeals and various phases of nine patent interferences. In addition, Patrick advises clients on FDA regulatory issues, particularly as they relate to patent coverage.

Patrick has represented clients in matters covering a wide range of technologies within the field of biotechnology. Representative technologies include small molecule therapeutics, antibody and peptibody therapeutics, recombinant DNA and proteins, genetically engineered microorganisms, enzymatic/metabolic pathways, genetic diagnostic methods, and nucleic acid microarrays. Representative clients include start-ups, private research institutions, and large pharmaceutical companies.

Patrick was trained as a molecular biologist. His doctoral research focused on elucidation of the mechanisms behind helicase-mediated DNA unwinding.
