Striving for Excellence: Are We There Yet?

Brenda Johnson Ray Brenda Johnson Ray, Site Head & Director, Sample Management Technologies, Research Triangle Park, GlaxoSmithKline

In an ever changing environment the Sample Management departments have always been put to the test; dispense more accurately, in an array of formats, on tight time scales, and deliver as quickly as possible. The department was always reacting to the needs of the customers, striving not to be the limiting bottleneck, but over the last five years there has been a definite shift of ownership. The Sample Management teams are now taking the lead in identifying ways to simplify the steps from registration of sample to assay plate creation and delivery. We are also educating the business by introducing new technologies and publishing the tractable data on the compounds delivered. How did this shift come about, how have we measured our successes and learned from are our failures, and most importantly; what does the future hold for this specialized team of scientists?

2:50 Evolution of Compound Management Systems in an Academic Environment

Gregory Wendel, Ph.D., Consultant

In contrast to the typical growth pattern of a pharmaceutical company’s compound collection and systems, the growth at an academic lab can be chaotic, driven by the idiosyncratic research goals of varied academic programs. A case study detailing the evolution of one such Compound Management team into a highly automated group capable of responding to high volumes of requests while marinating flexibility will be presented. Workflow development, hardware solutions, and end-user interactions will be highlighted.

Our approaches to database tracking, storage, distribution and quality analysis will be discussed. I will also touch on how RNAi and related reagents are managed at other facilities at Harvard Medical School and affiliated institutions.
