1:00 – 5:00 PM Expanding Your Influence: Understanding the Psychology of Persuasion
Kurt W. Mortensen, Founder, the Persuasion Institute, Author Persuasion IQ The 10 Skills You Need to Get Exactly What You Want and Maximum Influence (AMACOM 2004)

Bringing about the reaction you want from others and expanding your influence require insights that go beyond the actual process of influencing—and into the psychology of what truly prompts us to say “yes” or “no.” This workshop explores these psychological triggers, plus how this knowledge may be used not just for compliance, but for mutually desirable outcomes. You’ll uncover persuasion techniques that most people don’t even know exist and learn how to build your influence by applying these principles to any number of business interactions, from managing, mentoring and negotiating to conversations, writing and presentations. In addition, you will learn how to choose the best principle for any given situation and avoid being manipulated by others. Ultimately, this workshop can help you get the results you want—faster, and with more satisfaction and less effort.

How Attendees Will Benefit: Understand the principle of commitment and its impact on persuasion

  • Learn to use the “favor bank” to influence others
  • Recognize how to employ influencing principles in positive (rather than manipulative) ways
  • Develop a “sense of duty” in alliance partners
  • Learn to apply the art of social pressure
  • Identify influence principles that are sometimes used against you to gain compliance

We Will Cover:

  • The Principle of Reciprocity
  • Staying the course (commitment and consistency)
  • Changing the course while keeping the commitment
  • The Principle of Scarcity
  • The components of “likeability”
  • The Principle of Association (authority)
